Substantive/Developmental Editing

This is the shaping stage of editing where I look at worldbuilding, plot and structure, characterization, narration, voice, imagery and pacing.

  • A great story that readers want to read and publishers want to sell requires a strong foundation. I can help you get there.

How have you developed and ordered your ideas? How will your desired audience interact with the text? Have you crafted an immersive storyworld that supports and challenges your characters?

Is the story that lives in your head actually translating to the page for an audience to experience?

It is critical to have another mind looking at your work to figure out where the story and characters can be enhanced. In this editing relationship, I ask a lot of questions to help guide you to the answers you already have so you can understand your craft and become a better writer.

Consultation

This is for when you have a story outline, idea, or work-in-progress and you need help developing it.

  • Never underestimate the power of a conversation.

Consultations allow you to work through your thoughts aloud with me asking strategic questions that help develop your ideas and guide you in the right direction.

Consulting is a low-pressure way to expand ideas, or to see if we would be a good match for a longer project together.

Manuscript Evaluation

This is a great step before a developmental edit where I provide feedback on the manuscript as a whole.

  • Not sure if you’re ready for a full developmental edit? This is a mini version looking at the big picture stuff like plot, pace, character, and voice with a high-level view. I will review your manuscript and create an evaluation report that includes suggestions and techniques to improve the manuscript. A typical report is between 10 and 15 pages.

I specialize in:

  • Speculative Fiction

  • Creative Nonfiction

  • Young Adult Literature
